The G5 was Pontiac's take on the Cobalt, wrapped in sharper styling, and its owners often add audio and lighting to match the look. This Pontiac G5 high output alternator collection lists two Mechman units, 240 Amp and 320 Amp, for the 2.2L Ecotec from 2007-2010 and the 2.4L from 2007-2008.
The G5 had a short production life, which can make some parts harder to track down. The charging system is not one of them, since the G5 shares its Ecotec alternator family with several other GM compacts. That makes it straightforward to replace a tired original with a Pontiac G5 high output alternator and gain capacity for an aftermarket system at the same time.
Typical G5 upgrades include a touchscreen head unit, a compact amplifier for the door speakers, a subwoofer in the trunk and LED interior lighting. On a small engine running at low speed in traffic, those loads add up. The 240 Amp unit handles a single amplifier and lighting with margin to spare. The 320 Amp unit suits builds with more than one amplifier or a larger subwoofer setup.
