A racing battery has a different job than a daily driver battery. It may only need to start the engine and run ignition, fuel pump and data systems for a pass or a session, so a smaller case with less reserve capacity can be the right trade for lower weight and easier relocation. AGM construction holds the electrolyte in glass mat separators, so the battery is sealed and resists vibration, which helps in a trunk, cockpit or chassis-mounted location.
Add up what runs with the engine off or without an alternator: electric water pumps, fans, fuel pumps, ignition boxes and any audio. A total-loss car with no alternator needs enough capacity to finish the event, so step up from the S545 or S680 toward the S1200 or S3400 as the load grows.
Most XS Power S-Series AGM racing batteries are 12V. The S1600 is a 16V battery for cars whose ignition, fuel and electronics are rated for the higher voltage and that have a matching charging setup, or that are charged between rounds with a 16V charger. A 16V battery should never go into a stock 12V system.
Secure the battery with a proper hold-down, run cable sized for starter current and cable length, and use a solid chassis ground. Fuses and fuse holders belong near the battery on every positive run, and many classes have rules on battery location and cutoff switches, so check yours.
