Choosing RCA Cables for Your Amplifier

Start with channel count. A mono sub amp fed from a single sub output needs only one run, which is where the SAZ1 mono interconnects fit. Most head units and processors send a stereo pair to a sub or full-range amp, so 2-channel cables like the SAZ2 and SB2 cover the majority of installs. A 4-channel run such as the SAZ4 carries front and rear signals in one bundle, keeping the route tidy when a four-channel amp sits in the trunk.

Measure the route, not the distance

Measure along the path the cable will actually take, under trim panels and carpet, then add a little slack for service loops at each end. Sundown offers lengths from short 1.5-foot jumpers for linking amps on a rack up to 25-foot runs for trucks, SUVs and vans. A cable that comes up short forces a splice, and one far too long leaves coils stuffed behind panels.

Keep signal away from power

Route RCA cables down the opposite side of the vehicle from your power wire. When the two must meet, cross them at a right angle rather than running them side by side. Pair that layout with a solid amplifier ground and you remove the most common causes of alternator whine.

Splitters, Strapping Cables and Pairing

The SAZ 2M-1F Y-splitter takes one RCA output and feeds two inputs, a common fix when a single sub output has to drive two amplifiers or both inputs of one amp. The Full Tilt HQ Series strapping cable is a different tool: it links amplifiers designed to be strapped together, so check your amp's manual before buying one.

Signal is only half the job. Run power and ground in the right gauge with 4 AWG power wire or a complete kit from amp wiring kits, and shop amplifiers if you are still choosing the amp itself. The full lineup of install gear lives under Cable & Wire.
