Fuses & Fuse Holders

Every power wire that leaves the battery needs protection, and the right ANL fuses and holders keep a pinched or shorted cable from turning into a fire. Shop Full Tilt Audio fuses in several amp ratings, Sundown Audio standard and waterproof ANL holders, and Mini and Micro2 fuse taps for adding accessory circuits.

Why the Fuse Goes Near the Battery

The main fuse protects the wire, not the amplifier. Your amp has its own fuses or internal protection; the inline fuse is there so that if the power cable chafes through and shorts to the body, current stops before the insulation melts. That only works when the fuse sits close to the battery, typically within about 18 inches of the positive terminal, so very little unprotected cable remains. A fuse mounted in the trunk beside the amp leaves the entire run up front unprotected.

Sizing ANL Fuses and Choosing a Holder

Pick a rating that does not exceed what your power wire can safely carry and that sits at or a little above the system's real current draw. Adding up the fuse ratings on your amplifiers gives a useful starting point; then check that total against the cable gauge. A 1/0 run can usually take larger ANL fuses than a 4 AWG run, and Full Tilt fuses are offered in ratings from 150A up to 500A for that reason. When the fuse you need is larger than the wire can handle, step up the wire, not just the fuse.

Standard or waterproof

Sundown Audio's OFH-ST is a standard ANL holder for protected locations, while the OFH-WP waterproof version suits engine bays, truck beds and anywhere that sees spray or condensation. Full Tilt also offers its own fuse holder. Mount the holder securely so it cannot rattle against metal.

Fuse taps for small circuits

The Mini and Micro2 fuse taps plug into a slot in your factory fuse box to create a new fused circuit, handy for a remote turn-on lead, LED lighting or a gauge. Match the tap to the blade style your vehicle uses.

Finish the job with 1/0 AWG power wire and terminals and lugs sized to match, and if your system keeps growing, look at batteries to support the extra current. The full lineup of install supplies is under Cable & Wire.
