Cable & Wire

Amplifiers can only make the power their wiring lets them make, so this is where every install begins. Browse car audio wire, amp kits, RCA interconnects, fuses, terminals and heat shrink from Full Tilt Audio, Sundown Audio and Sparked Innovations, including tinned OFC power cable in 1/0, 4 and 8 AWG and OFC speaker wire on spools.

Choosing the Right Gauge of Car Audio Wire

Sizing car audio wire comes down to two things: how much current your amplifiers draw and how far that current has to travel. Estimate draw by dividing total RMS power by your charging voltage and the amp's efficiency. A 1,000 watt RMS class D amplifier running near 80 percent efficiency pulls roughly 90 amps at 13.8 volts, and longer runs need heavier cable to keep voltage drop in check. As a general guide:

  • 8 AWG suits a single smaller amplifier on a short run, such as a compact 4-channel amp.
  • 4 AWG covers most single-amp builds in the mid-power range.
  • 1/0 AWG is the usual choice for high-current systems, multiple amps fed through a distribution block, long runs to the back of a truck or SUV, and Big 3 upgrades.

Run a ground wire of the same gauge as the power cable, keep it short, and bolt it to clean bare metal.

OFC vs CCA

OFC wire is copper all the way through, while CCA (copper-clad aluminum) is aluminum with a thin copper coating. Copper conducts better, so OFC runs cooler and drops less voltage at the same gauge. If you use CCA, plan to go up at least one size. Several spools here are tinned OFC, where the tin plating helps resist corrosion at stripped ends and in humid climates.

Building a Complete Install

A wiring job has more parts than cable. Mount an ANL fuse within about 18 inches of the battery to protect the main power run, crimp ring terminals sized to each gauge, and seal every crimp with heat shrink. Use twisted-pair RCAs for signal and route them away from power. For speakers, 12 gauge OFC speaker wire suits subwoofers and higher-power runs, while 16 gauge handles typical door speakers.

Full Tilt Audio covers OFC power wire, speaker wire and amp kits in colors like teal, lime green, purple, white, red and blue. Sundown Audio adds RCAs, terminals, fuse holders, heat shrink and deadener, and Sparked Innovations contributes accessory extension cables. Start with 1/0 AWG power wire for big systems, 4 AWG power wire for most single-amp builds, or save time with amp wiring kits. Sizing gets easier once you know your amplifiers, and systems that draw serious current should be paired with batteries that can hold voltage up.
