Heat Shrink

A crimped lug is not finished until it is sealed, and heat shrink tubing does that job while giving your install a clean, color-coded look. Full Tilt offers logo-printed 10-packs for 1/0 and 4 AWG wire in colors like lime green, purple, yellow, blue, white, red and black, while Sundown Audio covers red and black in 1/0, 4 and 8 AWG.

How to Size Heat Shrink Tubing

Buy heat shrink by the wire gauge it will cover, not by guesswork. Tubing labeled for 1/0 AWG is meant to slide over 1/0 cable and the barrel of a 1/0 ring terminal, then shrink down tight. Too small and it will not pass over the crimp; too large and it may not grip the jacket once shrunk. If your build mixes gauges, such as a 1/0 main feed split to 4 AWG amp leads at a distribution block, order tubing for each size.

Installation tips

  • Slide the tubing onto the wire before you crimp, since it will not fit over a finished lug.
  • Cover the terminal barrel and overlap the cable jacket so no bare copper shows.
  • Shrink it with a heat gun and keep the gun moving; an open flame can scorch the tubing and the insulation underneath.
  • Let the joint cool before bending or routing the cable.

Color Coding and Matching Your Wire

Red on positive and black on ground is the convention for a reason: it makes troubleshooting faster and helps prevent reversed connections. Beyond that, color is about appearance. Full Tilt heat shrink tubing comes in many of the same shades as Full Tilt power wire and amp kits, so a white or lime green build can stay consistent from battery to amplifier. Sundown Audio keeps things simple with red and black.

Pair your tubing with matching terminals and lugs and the right cable, whether that is 1/0 AWG power wire for a main feed or a smaller gauge for a single amp. Protect that run with a fuse near the battery from fuses and fuse holders, and browse the rest of the install category under Cable & Wire.
