Recones

Blew a voice coil or tore a surround? Our subwoofer recone kits let you rebuild the driver you already own instead of replacing it. Most are factory drop-in assemblies from Sundown Audio, covering the SA, U, X, Xv.2, Xv.3, SD, SLD, NS, Z, VEX and Team series, and a Crossfire Audio C7 recone is available as well. A correct recone restores the sub to factory performance and keeps the original basket and motor in service.

What a Drop-In Recone Kit Replaces

A drop-in kit is the complete moving assembly: cone, surround, spider, voice coil and lead wires, pre-assembled so the parts stay aligned. The basket, magnet and motor structure from your original driver stay in place. Because the new assembly is built to the original specifications, the rebuilt sub should behave like it did out of the box, assuming the motor and gap are undamaged.

Choosing the Right Subwoofer Recone Kits

Match three things exactly: the series, the version or generation, and the size and coil code. The SA-Series 6.5 inch kit, for example, is offered in D2 and D4, and the Team V1/V2/Neo kits are split by size and by coil designation such as D1.4, D.7 and D.5. A kit for the wrong version may not fit the motor, or it may change the impedance your amplifier sees. If the label on the magnet is worn, check the model on your original invoice or the frame markings before ordering.

Shop by size with the 12 inch, 15 inch and 18 inch recone kit collections.

Installation basics

  • Remove the old cone, spider and surround, then scrape the old glue off the basket and gasket surfaces.
  • Clean metal debris out of the voice coil gap, since even small particles can rub against the coil.
  • Center the new coil with shims, glue the spider and surround, and let the adhesive cure completely before applying power.

Prevent the Next Failure

Blown subs usually trace back to clipping, too much power or a box that lets the cone over-travel. After rebuilding, set gains with care and confirm your amp's output fits the driver's RMS rating at your final impedance; our amplifiers include monoblocks sized for subwoofer duty. Subwoofer recone kits are also a smart move for older Sundown drivers you want to keep, so compare a rebuild against a new model in the Sundown Audio subwoofers or Crossfire subwoofers collections, or browse the full subwoofers lineup.
